![]() Though there are signs that warn you from going further, people clambered down to the base of the falls to take a dip. You hit a bottleneck at the lookout point for the falls, as everyone wants to get a picture there. You'll have company on the hike there and back with groups hiking faster than you or returning from the falls, but I wouldn't say it was crowded. It's a little less than 0.5 miles in and then back out, so budget yourself about 90 minutes overall. It's a slow but steady hike up to the falls themselves, but you hear the rush of the stream on your right as you get closer. It had been drizzling in this part of Honolulu, so the path was a little wet, but lush with all of the greenery. The Uber drop off is right outside the restroom/cafe area (while you pay for the Uber, you skip the parking fee that you have to pay to park here), and just a little ways off to the start of the trail. There's also a snack truck just a tiny bit further up the hill.Īfter settling into our hotel room in Waikiki, my partner and I grabbed an Uber to head to Manoa Falls, to continue my tendency to chase waterfalls while on vacation. I highly recommend the pineapple whip inside a hollowed out pineapple. There is a building at the base of the trail with washrooms and a place where you can get some food and snacks and drinks. You can take the number 5 bus to the falls (about 20 minutes from downtown Honolulu) and walk up the trail for free. There were signs warning to not go right down into the water at the base of the falls but many were doing it anyway. The falls are quite nice and the viewing area is pretty close to the falls. Along the trail you'll see some pretty crazy trees, streams, a lush tropical forest, and probably a rain shower. The trail varies quite a lot as to what kind of terrain you're walking on. I did see older people and people carrying infants doing it so just judge for yourself by looking at photos of the trail. It's only a 1.6 mile hike to the falls, but if you're carrying a small child, walking a dog, or if you don't like a bit of a climb on a rocky and muddy trail, it might be too much. It has really an enjoyable morning for all my family. ![]() One thing to notice is that, if you have stamina, you can hike all the way up to the Nuanu Pali lookout, which is also accessible via freeway, and that is exactly where we were headed after the falls. There is also a restaurant where you can get some refreshments and use the bathroom, and obviously buy souvenirs. Near the parking lot, there are some trailers selling refreshments and "dole whip" or something that they advertise as dole whip (dole whip is a pineapple soft-serve, which is sold in the Dole Plantation in the North Shore). There is some elevation gain, but I consider the hike easy to moderate. There was not much water on the fall the day we went, but we were there less for the fall and more for the hike. It can a bit muddy if it rained the day before, but that is the risk of most trails, especially those leading to waterfall. The hike is moderate and a very good exercise. It is not too far from Waikiki, and if you don't get there too late, you may be able to find parking (which is not the case of Diamond Head). After an unsuccessful attempt to go to Diamond Head, we decided to head further east to Manoa Falls for our morning hike.
